As the heat of summer fades away and the crisp fall air sets in, it’s the perfect time to check on your car and prepare it for the cold months ahead. In honor of Fall Car Care Month, we’ve put together a fall car care checklist for you.
Fluids – Check all of your fluids under the hood, including power steering fluid, engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, windshield washer fluid, and coolant.
Hoses and Belts – Changes in temperature can wear out belts faster, as can the snow, salt, and slush that winter brings. Inspect your belts now for signs of wear, including small cracks or fraying.
Brakes – If your brakes are squeaky, they probably need to be replaced. If they haven’t been replaced recently, have them looked at before the ice and snow arrive.
Tires – Your tires should always be checked for adequate tire pressure, but fall is the time to make sure they have enough tread so they can safely grip the road in inclement weather.
Exhaust System – Take a look under your car and check your exhaust system for holes and loose parts – nothing should be hanging down!
Battery – Colder weather is harsh on batteries, and if they aren’t working properly, they can cause issues for your vehicle in the winter months. Have a professional check your battery so that you’re not stuck with a car that won’t start.
Wipers – The last thing you need in winter weather is windshield wipers that won’t clean your windshield. Inspect them now so you can replace them if you need to!
Lights – Make sure that headlights, brights, turn signals, and reverse lights are working, not only so you can see, but so that others can see you on the road.
Heating, A/C, & Vents – If your A/C doesn’t work, you may already know, but now that the weather has cooled down a little, check both your heat and your air filter to make sure you’re getting enough clean air and you can control the temperature.
Emergency Kit – If your car breaks down in the winter, you’ll need to have the right tools to get it moving again, or to get yourself to safety. Keep the following in your car in the winter months:
● First Aid Kit
● Drinking Water
● Blankets
● Important Contact Numbers
● Snow Shovel
● Ice Scraper
● Salt, Sand, or Cat Litter
● Non-Perishable Snacks (for human and pet passengers)
● Paper Towels or Cloth
● Jumper Cables
● Flares or Warning Lights
● Basic Tools
