If you’re taking your vehicle to a repair shop, you’re trusting your mechanic to repair it safely, quickly, and cost effectively. However, many of the decisions regarding the repairs are up to you. A great mechanic will help you understand those decisions and your options for each one.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! If you aren’t sure where to start, don’t worry – we put together a list of questions that might be helpful.
Do you specialize in a specific type of vehicle or repair?
Some shops have a lot more experience working on some cars than others, which could be helpful if you have that make or model. Another question you could ask here is, have you ever worked on the make and model that I own?
What certifications does your shop have? What certifications do your technicians have?
Not all shops or technicians are created equally, and if you’re looking for a specific kind of repair, you might be better off finding a technician who has experience with that repair. Some collision repairs call for a more specific expertise than others.
What kinds of replacement parts do you use?
There are several options when it comes to choosing replacement parts for your car. First: new parts or recycled parts? Many shops offer both.
If a shop offers you new parts, make sure to ask whether they are using original equipment manufacturer parts or aftermarket parts, or if you’ll have the option to choose during the repair process.
Do you have a warranty policy? If so, please explain.
Often, repair shops offer warranties either on the parts they use or on the labor they perform. Always ask if there is a warranty and get details so if you need to, you can take advantage of it.
Do you charge for estimates?
Many shops offer free estimates, but not every one. If a shop charges, feel free to ask why, and remember that it’s likely you can find a free estimate elsewhere if your budget is tight or your insurance won’t cover the cost.
What do you charge for labor?
Shops set their own prices, and some may charge more for labor than others. Keep this in mind when you’re comparing estimates, and don’t be afraid to speak with other customers or look at reviews online to decide if the prices are worth it to you.
How would you proceed if this were your vehicle? Why?
This is a great question to ask if you’re faced with a decision that you don’t feel you have the expertise to make. Don’t be afraid to ask further questions if you don’t understand the answer!
