Why Oil Changes Are Important

oil serviceWhen it comes to cars, there are a few basic things that need to be done on a regular basis in order to keep them functioning properly. It’s important to check fluid levels, including fuel and oil, or the vehicle won’t run.

General Oil Maintenance

Engine oil needs to be changed regularly. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, it usually needs to be changed about every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. It’s also important to keep enough oil in the vehicle between oil changes, which is one reason that cars today come with a ‘check oil’ light. Like when the fuel level is low and the ‘low fuel’ light turns on, the ‘check oil’ light lets you know that the oil in your vehicle needs to be checked.

Why Do I Need to Change The Oil?

Without enough engine oil, or without clean engine oil, the engine cannot be properly lubricated. Lubrication allows the engine to run smoother and quieter, and the parts will last longer.

When oil is poured into the vehicle, usually from the top of the engine, it goes to the oil pump. The pump maintains a specific level of pressure, which allows it to pump oil throughout the engine. That way, the oil enters the space between the moving parts of the engine, keeping them lubricated and allowing them to move efficiently.

Depending on your vehicle, the heat created as the parts of the engine move can burn oil off, or, if there is a hole in the system, it can leak. Usually, in new vehicles, this rarely happens and replenishing the oil is unnecessary. It is a good idea to check your oil levels when you fill your gas tank, especially in older vehicles.

What if I’m in an Accident?

An accident can cause holes or cracks, depending on the severity of the crash, in different parts of the vehicle connected to the oil system. Oil that leaks outside of the system can be messy, is nearly impossible to remove, and is a potential fire hazard.

If oil is leaking from your vehicle, or if your ‘check oil’ light is illuminated on the dash, it’s important to have a mechanic look at your vehicle to make sure it’s in a safe and drivable condition.
